Bobby Wilcox VVA Chapter 915 (Austin, Texas) Obituary

Bobby Darrell Wilcox passed away in his home, comforted by family, on March 10, 2025. After being diagnosed with prostate cancer in July 2017, he was finally able to overcome the disease after adding many sweet memories, much love, and laughter, and contributing to the advancement of a future cure.

Bobby was born on November 18, 1942, in Red River County, TX, the second son of Robert and Ella PACE Wilcox. He graduated from Knowles, OK, as the salutatorian (of a five-person class). He attended Texas Tech before being invited to join the United States Army. He did basic training in Fort Polk, LA, followed by Tank Training/M60 in Fort Knox, KY, before being sent to Fort Hood, TX, and assigned to the 2nd Armored Division “Hell on Wheels”. His MO, Power Generator Specialist, got him another special invitation to be attached to the 166th Transportation Corp Detachment as a generator maintenance specialist, helicopter mechanic, and gunner. His unit was transported to Vietnam in May 1965, where he served until March 24, 1966. He was honorably discharged on February 28, 1970.

Bobby married Linda ROMINES Wilcox on June 1, 1968, in Slaton, TX. The couple moved to Austin, TX, in October of the same year, raising their three children, Brad, Brian, and Melinda (Mindy), while living in that area.

Bobby was a building contractor by trade with a love for finish carpentry. His idea of a sports event was hunting or fishing. As a faithful member of Windsor Park Baptist Church in Austin, he dedicated himself to serving the youth, was ordained a deacon, and served on various support committees. The couple joined First Baptist Church of Pflugerville in 2012, where his favorite job was usher and greeter. He was a life member of VFW and a Charter member of American Legion Kerlin-Lyerly 154 of Pflugerville.

Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee and Ella Belle PACE Wilcox, brothers Carl, David, Richard, and sister Nancy.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, of almost 57 years, son Brad Wilcox (Christie) of Quitman, TX, son Brian Wilcox (Zee) of Dallas, TX, and daughter Melinda Radley (Chris) of Pflugerville, TX. His surviving siblings include Robert Wilcox (Glenda) of Dale, TX, Billy Wilcox (Nancy) of Seguin, TX, Tommy Wilcox (Shelia) of Mineola, TX, Larry Wilcox of Mauriceville, TX, Jimmy Wilcox (Connie) of Clute, TX, and Marsha Sisson of Colmesneil, TX. Bobby was blessed to have seven grandchildren, five blessed grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. His “family” was not restricted to traditional confines, but stretched to include precious nieces, nephews, friends, and some of them thought of him as a father.
